Margaret's babysitting jobs as a teenager for the children of artists opened the world of art to her. She discovered that she especially loved the watercolor paintings in the home of one of the artists and purchased one with her earnings. That watercolor seascape still hangs proudly in her Sister's home. At that time she dreamed of learning to paint using watercolors. As a athlete and competitive swimmer Margaret knew that hard work and determination led to success. She knew that those qualities would put her on a path to paint in watercolors someday but her college education became her priority at that time.
Margaret earned an undergraduate degree in education and a graduate degree from DePaul University in Curriculum/Program Development. She enjoyed art classes as an undergraduate and taught art as part of her students' curriculum. Margaret's creativity and passion were dedicated to her students as well as the teachers she worked with during her career as a teacher, intern trainer, workshop presenter, parent, and reading coach both in Chicago and Florida. Her family and career were her priorities. Painting was put aside.
As the years went on art was appreciated at local art shows and galleries but it wasn't until 2012 that her dream of pursuing art became a reality. Margaret took her first class in watercolors with award-winning artist Carol Rosefelt at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. Since then she has continued to develop her skills through classes, workshops, artist's videos, reading, and painting.
Margaret joined the Tarpon Springs Art Association in 2013. She is a member of the Dunedin Fine Arts Center, the Florida Watercolor Society, the Crystal Beach Art Group, and a Board Member of the Creative Artists' Guild. She shares a studio at Stirling Studios and Gallery. For the past year Margaret has a rotating exhibit of her paintings at Salon Touché in the historic Arcade Hotel Building in Downtown Tarpon Springs.
At the Tarpon Springs Art Association Annual December Show in 2013, she was awarded 3rd place in the Water Media category for her watercolor painting, "Triplets". Margaret's "Exhilaration" photograph won the top award in the Creative Artist Guild Spring Show in 2015. She admires the work of the contemporary watercolorist, Sterling Edwards, and is inspired by the famous French Impressionist painter, Claude Monet. Seascapes, landscapes, and floral paintings are reflections of her own photographs and as well as flowers grown in her Florida garden.
Being part of the Stirling family with so many talented artists has been an inspiration in Margaret's journey into art. She looks forward to many artistic discoveries as her quest as a watercolorist continues.
